The store didn't change. The reaction did.
Think about what you do when it starts. Slow breathing. "It's just anxiety." Water, a phone call, the nearest exit. Or you stop going at all.
None of that is your fault. It's what everyone is told to do. But each one is a way of getting rid of the feeling, and every time you get rid of it, your body learns the feeling was an emergency.
- A sensationYour heart pounds. Your breath feels short.
- A scary thought"Something is really wrong this time."
- A reactionCalm it down, get out, check, avoid.
- Your body learns"That was dangerous."
- It comes back soonerAnd louder. Then it starts again at 1.
So what keeps panic going isn't the feeling. It's the reaction.
It peaks. Then it passes.
- UncomfortableYes
- DangerousNo
Panic is your body's get-ready-to-run system. It peaks and passes on its own, usually within about 10 minutes, even if you do nothing. Most people have never seen that happen, because they always did something.
Your mind knows. Your body doesn't.
You already know you're not dying in the checkout line. You've told yourself a hundred times. That's why understanding panic doesn't fix it: words teach the mind, and the body learns from experience.
It learns by going through it, a little at a time, with someone guiding each step. Done alone, exposure tends to backfire. White-knuckle through it, or go in holding your water bottle and your exit plan, and your body still learns it was an emergency. Please don't try it on your own.

Questions people ask
I've had this for years. Is it too late?
No. One year or twenty, what your body learned, it can unlearn.
I've tried therapy before.
A lot of our clients have. Talking about panic teaches the mind. This program is built to teach the body, by going through it, one step at a time.
Exposure sounds terrifying.
You won't be thrown into anything. The first two weeks have no practice at all. Then you start small, you choose each step with your counselor, and you can always stop.
Virtual? For panic?
For many people with panic, getting to an office is part of the problem. You start from wherever you feel okay. Later, the practice goes out into the world.
I don't have time.
It's one session a week from home, plus short videos and check-ins that take a couple of minutes. And it has an end date.
I'm on medication.
You don't have to stop anything to join. Keep taking what you're prescribed, and talk to your prescriber before changing anything.
What if it comes back?
In Week 8 you build your own plan for when panic visits again, and you keep the practice tool in the app for six months after the program ends.
Do you take insurance?
We give you superbills, so you can ask your insurance to reimburse you for out-of-network care. HSA and FSA cards work too.
What happens on the free call?
It's 20 minutes with a Texas-licensed counselor, by phone or video. It's not a sales pitch. We'll ask about your panic and what you've tried, and tell you honestly whether this program is right for you. If it isn't, we'll point you to what is.
I don't live in Texas.
For now the program is only for adults who live in Texas, because every counselor is licensed here.
